What is a yacht Charter?

Yacht Chartering is defined as the practice of renting a sailboat or motor yacht and traveling to various coastal destinations. Worth Avenue Yachts thinks of charter a little differently. To us Yacht Chartering is the definition of a luxurious vacation.

A Private Yacht Vacation is an ideal vacation for those who love being on the water in some of the world’s most beautiful locations, but don’t want to sacrifice five-star treatment. It is unlike any other vacation you may experience. From your itinerary to your gourmet meals created by highly skilled chefs, you have the opportunity to be as hands-on, or hands-off, as you would prefer. You are only limited by your imagination.

A yacht charter is fully customizable to meet your exact needs and desires, ensuring a personalized experience that suits you perfectly. From the moment you step on board, you’ll feel like you’re in your own floating villa, complete with a professional crew trained to provide attentive “silver service” and a chef who has honed their gourmet skills in some of the world’s finest restaurants.

Privacy, luxury, and security are the three pillars of a yacht charter vacation. The staterooms and suites on board are often comparable to the finest penthouses, with guests having complete seclusion if desired. The security aboard a luxury charter yacht is top-notch, providing peace of mind in a world with disturbing headlines.

Your charter broker and captain will tailor your vacation to exceed all of your expectations and desires. Whether you want to explore a deserted beach or dance at the hottest clubs, the itinerary is entirely up to you. The crew can teach children to fish, snorkel, or windsurf, while adults can enjoy high-tech water toys like drones and flyboards. A yacht charter vacation is the perfect base for celebrating milestones, such as birthdays, anniversaries, or business successes.

The crew may surprise you with a pirate-themed dinner party or plan a secret picnic on a deserted beach. Many crews are so beloved for their sense of fun that they develop a following of charter clients who book the same yacht year after year. The multi-talented crew is often composed of highly trained nurses and paramedics, massage therapists, fishing guides, scuba dive masters, and even personal trainers and yoga instructors.

In short, a yacht charter vacation is an unparalleled travel experience. With a customized itinerary, luxurious accommodations, and a professional crew dedicated to making your vacation unforgettable, a yacht charter is the perfect way to create special and lasting memories.

Anatomy-of-a-yacht-charter

Reasons to charter a yacht

Worth Avenue Yachts charter experts and the captains of the selected vessels are familiar with the best anchorages, the top on and offshore activities and where to source the best local seafood and produce to make the most of each destination.

There’s always so much to see and do when exploring a new destination. A yacht charter offers the safety, security and all the amenities of a resort without the crowds or schedule. Allow yourself the freedom to control your itinerary, change your plans, sleep in or stay up late, whatever your heart desires in the moment.

The crew makes a big difference in any yacht charter and will provide the highest level of service to ensure each charter is tailored to your needs. From unpacking your suitcase, to preparing an exotic cocktail – your crew is standing by to make it happen.

The supreme level of privacy onboard a yacht is unparalleled. Yachts offer access to private anchorages, secret beaches, coves, hidden restaurants and beach clubs that no one else can get to.

From wild onboard theme nights to spectacular onboard experiences including: beach clubs, outdoor cinemas, pools, expansive dining spaces, helicopters, personal submarines, inflatable climbing walls, onboard masseuse, to an endless supply of fun, a private yacht vacation offers it all!

The Essential Role of Yacht Crew in Crafting Personalized Vacation Experiences

A private yacht vacation provides guests with a crew that plays a crucial role in ensuring an unforgettable experience. One of the crew members, the chef, is dedicated to catering to guests’ specific culinary preferences, providing a level of personalization not found in most luxury vacations. Whether guests are vegans or have a particular craving, the chef can meet their dietary requests, even flying in specialty foods like Beluga caviar or Japanese wagyu beef if necessary. The chef’s attention to detail and commitment to guest satisfaction make them an invaluable part of the yacht crew.

Another important member of the yacht crew is the captain, who provides guidance on itineraries, transit times, and places to visit, ensuring that guests make the most of their time onboard. With their knowledge and experience, captains can often “trick” the itinerary by traveling when guests are asleep to take advantage of calm weather conditions. The yacht crew is a diverse team of professionals, ranging from nurses and paramedics to massage therapists, fishing guides, scuba dive masters, personal trainers, and yoga instructors. With their expertise, they can make the vacation experience enjoyable for all ages, whether it’s teaching children how to catch fish or providing high-tech water toys like drones and flyboards for the adults. The yacht crew’s multi-talented skills and dedication to guest satisfaction make them an essential part of a luxury yacht vacation.

Determine where you want to go and when. Use this guide to discover some of our favorite cruising grounds and what ideal season to visit.

Consider in advance the size of your group and the nature of the trip you have in mind, whether it’s a family gathering, a friends’ getaway, a romantic escapade for two, or a combination thereof. Providing this information to your broker will enable them to locate the best-suited yacht for your needs. Additionally, be sure to communicate the number of cabins and beds you require, as some yachts may have designated quarters for staff members like nannies, nurses, security personnel, personal trainers, or assistants that aren’t included in the guest count.

Get in touch with your charter broker to browse a selection of yachts that fit your group’s needs and are available during your desired timeframe. From speedy sailing superyachts for racing in regattas, to sturdy explorer yachts for off-the-beaten-path adventures, to spacious vessels for family vacations or elegant classics for a touch of glamour, there’s a yacht out there that’s the perfect match. Collaborate with your reliable charter broker to discover the yacht that’s right for you, within your budget.

Choose yacht, sign your charter agreement and pay a 50% deposit to secure the yacht for your dates. The remaining balance of the charter fee, together with the Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), taxes (if applicable), and delivery fee (if applicable) will be required at least 30 days before the start of your vacation.

Your Charter Specialist will send Preference Sheets approximately 6 weeks prior to your charter to discuss your dietary requirements, any food allergies and menu preferences in order for the chef to begin creating menus and provisioning for your trip.

Dial in your itinerary with your charter broker and yacht captain.

When packing for a private yacht vacation, it’s important to keep in mind that it’s different from a resort or cruise ship vacation. Soft-sided luggage is recommended for limited storage space, along with light and versatile summer clothing. Shoes are not allowed on board, and bare feet are preferred. Essential accessories include sunglasses, sunscreen, and a good camera, as well as any necessary medications and toiletries. It’s recommended to leave valuables at home and pack light, leaving room for souvenirs.

A crew profile provided by your charter broker can help you familiarize yourself with your crew. Private yachts offer a crew-to-guest ratio that surpasses that of a typical luxury resort. Your attentive crew is committed to meeting your every requirement and delivering top-notch service. Whether it’s unpacking your luggage or mixing up a fancy cocktail, your crew is always available to fulfill your wishes.

The themes can range from a pirate-themed night in the Caribbean to a Hollywood-themed night on the yacht. The key to a successful theme night is to match guests’ personalities with their favorite food and the destination of the yacht. Theme nights can be perfect for family reunion charters and can be pre-planned or a complete surprise.

Book excursions and water toys in advance. If you have specific activities in mind, such as diving or surfing, communicate these interests to your charter broker and verify that the yacht is equipped with the necessary gear and compressors. From playing golf on the top deck to shooting hoops onboard, there are yachts that cater to a wide range of interests.

ACtivities

Each yacht features an array of water toys and other pastimes onboard, such as board and card games, and a list of movies and music. Be sure to discuss your favorite water sports with our Charter Specialist so we can take into consideration specific water toys should these not be included in the yacht’s amenities.

Yacht Charter FAQ

Yacht Charter Frequently Asked Questions

A yacht charter is a truly unique vacation experience that offers the ultimate blend of privacy, freedom, and luxury all in one. With a yacht charter, you have the possibility to go anywhere and do anything you want, making it the perfect vacation for a romantic getaway, family adventure, or couples trip. By working with your broker in advance and taking note of the tips below, you can ensure that your yacht charter trip will be an unforgettable success.

The majority of yachts quote their pricing on a weekly “plus expenses” basis which includes the hire of the yacht, the crew, and the yacht’s insurance. Some yachts will consider less than a full week of charter. Please keep in mind that each yacht is privately owned and negotiations and availability may vary from Owner to Owner.

The APA, or “plus expenses” is estimated to be approximately 35% of the charter rate; however, this can vary depending on your preferences. The APA is used to pay for items including, but not limited to, food and beverages, fuel, dockage, communications, pilot fees, etc. The Captain will keep a detailed report of the expenditures and receipts, which can be shown to you at any time during the charter. The Captain will present the final report together with the receipts on the last day of the charter. Any remaining funds will be returned, if the APA does not cover the expenditures, you are responsible for fulfilling the outstanding payment prior to departure.

Yachts may be subject to sales tax or VAT (Value Added Tax) in certain countries where the yacht is chartering. Your Charter Specialist will advise if this applies to your charter. Rates vary from 7% in Alaska to almost 22% in certain countries in the Mediterranean.

A crew gratuity may be offered at the sole discretion of the Charterer. We usually recommend a gratuity between 10% – 20% of the base charter rate depending on your satisfaction received with the service on board. Typically, a gratuity is distributed by the Captain equally among the crew unless otherwise specified.

Many yachts chartering within international waters now operate under a standardized agreement sponsored by the Mediterranean Yacht Broker Association (MYBA). Other standard agreements include the American Yacht Charter Association (AYCA) and the International Yacht Brokers Association (IYBA). These charter agreements protect and clearly define the rights and obligations of each party.

There are times when a trip may need to be cancelled due to unforseen circumstances. Most charter contracts do not provide a refund for cancellation, therefore we would recommend securing Trip Cancellation Insurance as an added security in the event you may need to cancel your trip. We would be pleased to refer you to an Insurance Specialist who can assist you with arranging a policy not covered by the basic Charter Agreement.

While some crew members are great with children and can organize fun activities for them, don’t assume that they will act as your nanny. If you want to fully relax on your trip, consider bringing your own childcare. Bringing your nanny can provide a sense of comfort for your child in a new environment and maintain their routine, despite jet lag. Happy kids mean a happy trip for everyone.

To prevent any disagreements among your traveling companions, it’s best to sort out the accommodations division in advance when chartering a yacht. Most charter yachts are designed with multiple parties in mind, ensuring that there are more than one spacious suite to avoid anyone feeling downgraded to a smaller cabin. Typically, the largest suite goes to the primary charterer who is responsible for most of the expenses. However, if you’re sharing the costs equally with other couples, consider finding a yacht with several master suites or VIP cabins, which can be located with the help of your broker. Plan ahead and discuss who gets which room to avoid any uncomfortable situations once you’re on board.

No. Follow your captain’s advice – don’t miss out on enjoying the journey. Captains are experts at optimizing time and can also travel during the night.
